History Timeline

We’ve grown alongside the Latin American traveler to become the leading online travel company in the region. Following the launch of the Despegar website in Argentina in 1999, we quickly expanded our footprint in the following years to Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, Venezuela and the United States. Our strong track record of growth in new markets and products in the early years led to the investment by Tiger Global Management in Despegar in 2007.

During the first decade of our operations we developed cutting edge technology, built a leading brand and expanded into new travel products. For example, in 2009 we launched hotel products and experienced another growth wave, expanding into Bolivia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay and Puerto Rico. A key achievement for Despegar was the launch of our mobile travel app in 2012, which has since become the most downloaded online travel app in Latin America. During that year, other strategic advancements included the launch of packages, rental cars and cruise products, which saw our customer base expand to 2.7 million. In the following years we further expanded our product offering, launching destination services and vacation rentals in 2013 and a travel affiliate program and travel insurance in 2014.

In 2015, we deepened our strategic partnership with Expedia, which led to its equity investment in Despegar. Combined with our existing offering, this relationship provides superior access to products for our regional clients. A key milestone occurred in 2016 when we reached 50% mobile traffic and launched our bus business and local concierge product as part of destination services for our 4 million customers. The culmination of our expansion into 20 markets and broad suite of travel products was our successful IPO on the New York Stock Exchange in September, 2017.
